Easter, Pentecost, and the Trinity
The season of Easter lasts 50 days, from Easter Sunday to the Day of Pentecost. It is a time to celebrate our redemption, and feel joyous. We hear the stories of Christ’s post-resurrection appearances; we rejoice in the promise of our life to come and the wiping away of sin. And St. Martin’s can celebrate a renewing spirit and our continuation in the Lord’s service.
Jesus was on earth 40 days after his resurrection. Ten days later the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and they rushed into the streets of Jerusalem and the world, no longer afraid. With that moment, Christianity was born. While on earth, the ministry belonged to Jesus; since that Pentecost, the ministry is done through us.
In a sense, we are all given new birth with Pentecost. Our baptism has meaning beyond a declaration of sinfulness. It is the beginning of the full life in God that only comes from our life in Christ, and we receive that only through baptism. It should be no surprise that Pentecost is one of the five traditional days of baptism – it is the every Christians’ birthday!
On May 31 it’s “Happy Birthday” to the Christian Church!

It is the confounding mystery of the Church among several
Easter is the story of the Father and the Son. Pentecost is the story of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday unifies them all. Trinity Sunday is the only holiday in which we honor a doctrine rather than an event or a person. “Holy, holy, holy. Lord God Almighty. Blessed Trinity!”
